CONSUMERS in the Klang Valley who use Amway products can now visit its new concept shop in Bandar Botanic, Klang.

The opening of the concept shop – the first in the Klang Valley – is part of public-listed direct-selling company Amway (Malaysia) Holdings Berhad’s (Amway’s) on-going expansion strategy to give its distributors and customers a new shopping experience.

Direct selling stays resilient

PETALING JAYA: Direct selling companies are expected to remain resilient in the present downturn on aggressive marketing activities and attracting more distributors.

OSK Investment Bank recently conducted a survey on consumers and found 13% of respondents were likely to take up part-time jobs to supplement their income and tackle the present slowdown.

KUALA LUMPUR: Amway (M) Holdings Bhd posted a net profit of RM19.4mil for the first quarter ended March 31, or 7% lower than the previous corresponding period’s of almost RM21mil, due to the unfavourable exchange rate for the ringgit against the US dollar, coupled with increased promotional expenses.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, it said it posted 13% increase in revenue to RM163.8mil from RM144.8mil previously, due to effective promotional activities and higher productivity of distributors.

WHILE the global economic downturn undoubtedly brings major uncertainties, Malaysian companies in general are on a much stronger footing to face it and the many quarters of weakening earning prospects now, compared with the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.

A handful of companies have started to cut cash dividends to preserve their cash flows and capital. The list includes, most prominently, Public Bank Bhd which made up for the shortfall by declaring a share dividend, but surprisingly, also consumer companies Amway (M) Holdings Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd that belong to one of the most recession-resilient sectors.
